Is Skiathos Worth Visiting in 2026?

Lonely Planet just named Skiathos the second most beautiful island in Europe. They called it a "pine-scented paradise in the glittering Sporades" with "over 60 exquisite beaches." It landed ahead of Sardinia, Corsica, and Menorca -- behind only Korcula in Croatia.

That's a bold claim for an island most people outside Greece haven't heard of. So is Skiathos actually worth visiting, or is this just travel media hyperbole?

After hosting over 500 guests here since 2019, we have a pretty clear answer. But rather than giving you a blanket yes, here's an honest breakdown of what Skiathos does well, what it doesn't, and who it's right for.

What Skiathos Does Better Than Most Greek Islands

The beaches. That's the headline, and it's genuine. Skiathos packs over 60 beaches into an island that measures just 12km by 6km. To put that in perspective, you're never more than a 20-minute drive from any beach on the island.

But it's not just quantity. Koukounaries Beach has fine golden sand backed by a protected wetland where black swans actually live -- not a detail you'll find on many Greek beaches. Lalaria Beach, accessible only by boat, has smooth white pebbles and a natural rock arch. Kastro Beach sits below the ruins of a medieval fortress town perched on a northern cliff. Each beach has a distinct character, which means you can visit a different one every day for a week without repeating.

The other thing that sets Skiathos apart is the green. Roughly two-thirds of the island is covered in pine forest, protected as an "aesthetic forest" since 1977. This isn't the dry, rocky landscape people associate with Greek islands. It's lush, shaded, and the air genuinely smells like pine resin. If you've been to Mykonos or Santorini, the difference is striking.

2026 Is a Particularly Good Year to Visit

Several things have converged this year that make Skiathos more accessible than it's ever been.

Direct flights have expanded significantly. Jet2 alone is running 19 weekly flights from 9 UK airports, offering nearly 85,000 seats for the season. Discover Airlines has launched a new Munich-to-Skiathos route starting May 14. Nordic Leisure covers Scandinavia with flights from Oslo, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Copenhagen, and a new Ronne route. EasyJet flies from Bristol, Gatwick, and Manchester. A few years ago, getting to Skiathos from northern Europe meant routing through Athens. That's no longer the case.

The island is investing in itself. A EUR 13.9 million infrastructure program is funding road resurfacing across the island, plus restoration of the Bourtsi peninsula fortress and the medieval Castle. There's also a EUR 500,000 tourism promotion initiative. These aren't glamorous headlines, but they translate to better roads, more preserved heritage sites, and an island that's actively improving.

The Lonely Planet recognition matters not because it makes the beaches better, but because it signals that Skiathos is moving from "hidden gem" to "established destination." Visiting now means you get the improved connectivity without the overcrowding that sometimes follows major media attention.

Who Skiathos Is Perfect For

Families with children. The beaches are genuinely safe for kids -- many are sheltered, with gentle entry into the water. The island is compact enough that you never spend long in the car. And the pine forest offers shade that you won't find on barren Cycladic islands. We cover this in detail in our guide to the best Greek islands for families.

Couples who want beauty without pretension. Skiathos Town has good restaurants and bars, but it's not a scene. Evenings are about waterfront dinners and walks along the old port, not velvet ropes and EUR 25 cocktails. For more on this, see our couples' guide to Skiathos.

Active travelers. This one surprises people. Skiathos has 26 marked hiking trails covering roughly 200km, threading through pine forest with views down to coves. You can hike directly from our villas into the "Magic Forest" trails. The National Marine Park of Alonissos -- the largest marine protected area in Europe at 2,260 square kilometers -- is a day trip away, with snorkeling and diving opportunities. We've written a detailed hiking guide if that interests you.

History and culture seekers. Alexandros Papadiamantis, widely regarded as Greece's most important prose writer, was born in Skiathos Town -- his house is now a museum. The Moni Evangelistrias monastery is where the first Greek flag was raised in 1807 during the lead-up to the War of Independence. Kastro, the medieval fortress town on the island's northern cliff, served as the island's capital for centuries. These aren't tourist recreations; they're living history.

The Honest Downsides

No destination is perfect, and pretending otherwise doesn't help anyone plan a good trip.

It's not a nightlife island. Skiathos Town has bars and the occasional live music night, but if clubbing is a priority, Mykonos or Ios will serve you better. Skiathos winds down relatively early.

July and August get busy. The main road, which runs along the southern coast, can see traffic during peak season. Popular beaches like Koukounaries fill up by midday. The solution is straightforward: visit in June or September when temperatures are a comfortable 25-30 degrees Celsius, the sea is warm, and crowds thin out by 30-40 percent. We make this case in our September travel guide.

It's small. If you need a sprawling island with dozens of villages, Crete or Rhodes will better suit you. Skiathos is intimate -- some people love that, others find it limiting after ten days.

The airport runway is famously short. Planes approach low over the road at one end of the runway, which is dramatic for onlookers but means larger aircraft can't land. This limits flight capacity, though the 2026 route expansions show airlines are making it work with appropriately sized planes.

When to Visit and How to Get There

Best months: June and September. June averages 28 degrees Celsius with sea temperatures around 22 degrees. September is slightly cooler at 25 degrees but the sea has warmed to its peak. Both months offer meaningfully fewer tourists than the July-August peak.

From the UK: Direct flights on Jet2 (Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, London Stansted, Manchester, Newcastle) and easyJet (Bristol, Gatwick, Manchester). Flight time is roughly 3.5 hours.

From mainland Greece: Athens to Skiathos is a 30-minute flight. By sea, high-speed ferries from Volos take about 2.5 hours, with 1-4 departures daily from around EUR 35.

From Germany and Scandinavia: The new Discover Airlines route from Munich starts May 14, 2026. Nordic Leisure covers Scandinavian cities comprehensively.

The Verdict: Is It Worth It?

Here's the straightforward answer. If you want a Greek island with exceptional beaches, genuine natural beauty, easy access, and a pace that leans toward relaxation over spectacle, Skiathos is one of the best options in the Mediterranean. The Lonely Planet ranking isn't just marketing -- it reflects something real about this island's combination of pine forest, clear water, and manageable scale.

It won't suit everyone. If you want all-night parties, vast archaeological complexes, or the iconic blue-dome churches of the Cyclades, other islands are better fits. But for the question most people are actually asking -- "will I have a great week here?" -- the answer, based on years of welcoming guests, is consistently yes.

The locals call it "the boomerang island" because visitors keep coming back. After seeing what 2026 brings in terms of connectivity and infrastructure, that pattern is likely to strengthen.
